PhD defense of Pierre Garneret

Hello everybody,

I am pleased to invite you to my PhD defense, entitled "Paper microfluidic for on-field diagnostic : sample preparation and multiplexing", Thursday, Decembre 5th, 2019, at 10h in the Boreau amphitheater (ESPCI).
Please find the abstract enclosed.
The defense will be in French, and will be followed by a “pot” on IPGG terrace on 7th floor.

Abstract

Paper has recently been pointed out as an ideal substrate for microfluidic analysis systems.
Capillary pumping and filtration abilites, along with its low cost and wide availability, are perfectly suited for point of care diagnostic applications [1].
Since the 2014 Ebola outbreak, the MMN Laboratory and the Pasteur Institute (CIBU team) are working to conduct molecular biology tests on paper microfluidics for the diagnosis of infectious diseases. Tests realised in Guinée in 2015, by the two teams, have shown the pertinence of the technology [2].
In this thesis, we developped on paper a multiplexed RNA molecular biology test (rt-LAMP) from biological matrices (plasma, serum, etc). All those findings have been integrated for one relevant application: A multiplexed test for the detection of Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya viruses. Those three viruses, sharing the same moskito vector, and leading to the same symptoms have been involved in several recent epidemics. Among them the brazilian Zika outbreack in 2016, which brought up some severe neurological complications [3].
At last, we will present and discuss some developpments out of human diagnosis scope, especially in veterinary sciences.
